Join Us in a Ground breaking Journey to Explore the Universe!

The BBA Alumni Association of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, CUHK and Hong Kong (International) Aerospace Charitable Foundation (“the Foundation”), with Orion Astropreneur Space Academy (Hong Kong) Limited (OASA) as supporting partner, proudly present the “Into the Future Series: The Frontier Research on Black Holes” featuring Professor Paul Ho as the Guest Speaker.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), advancements in aerospace technology are accelerating at an unprecedented pace. In the coming decade or two, space tourism may gradually become a reality for the general public, making lunar landing will no longer be exclusive to a selected few astronauts and payload specialists.

Astronomy is the foundation of aerospace technology, and humanity’s innate curiosity about the universe drives the inevitable expansion into outer space.

Professor Paul Ho

Born in Hong Kong and migrated to the United States at the age of 11, Professor Paul Ho is a distinguished astrophysicist whose pioneering work in radio astronomy and millimeter/ sub millimeter astrophysics has significantly advanced our understanding of star formation, molecular clouds, and active galactic nuclei. After earning his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Professor Ho held key positions at prestigious institutions, including the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Academia Sinica’s Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA) in Taiwan. As the Director of the East Asian Observatory (EAO), Professor Ho has played a pivotal role in fostering international collaboration in astronomy, particularly through the operation of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii.

The seminar explores the ground breaking imaging of the M87 super massive black hole shadow (2019)—a cosmic giant 6.5 billion times the mass of our Sun and about 5,500 million light years from Earth.

Capturing the image of the Milky Way’s M87 to observe its gravitational effects was a monumental achievement, building upon previous studies where scientists had explored its gravity through auditory and tactile methods. These earlier works led to ground breaking papers that received widespread media coverage and eventually earned the Nobel Prize in Physics. This in-depth lecture, however, focuses on the study of its gravity through visual observation.

Also, participants will learn about the future of black hole research and Hong Kong’s role in this global endeavor. Black holes are among the most fascinating and mysterious objects in the universe. Studying them helps us:

– Test Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

– Unlock secrets of gravity, space-time, and the origins of the cosmos.

– Advance Hong Kong’s role in cutting-edge space science and technology.

Promote astrophysics research and development as well as education in Hong Kong.

Using a global network of telescopes including Hawaii’s James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) and Greenland’s cutting-edge observatories, we could “see” gravity by capturing high-resolution images of the black hole’s shadow; analyse space-time distortions to reveal new physics; and inspire the next generation of scientists through education and outreach.

Synopsis:

Suk-jing (played by Hedwig Tam), a woman in her 30s, has recently become a mother. While the arrival of her baby girl brings happiness and joy, it also comes with unexpected changes and overwhelming pressures. Despite holding a full-time job as a baker, she is naturally expected to be her daughter’s primary caregiver — day and night — making her the first to be blamed whenever the baby is unwell or cries inconsolably.

Her husband (played by Lo Chun-yip), a delivery driver, remains detached from parenting, living much the same way as he did before their child was born. Meanwhile, conflicts with her live-in in-laws over childcare and traditional gender roles add to her frustrations, yet returning to her own family no longer feels like an option. Sleep deprivation, postpartum changes, and the constant demands of motherhood begin to take a toll on her well-being, even affecting the job she values so deeply. The so-called “side effects” of becoming a mother seem to permeate every aspect of her life.

Determined to be a “good mother”, Suk-jing pours everything into her new role — only to feel herself slowly disappearing in the process. As she endures night after night of caring for her child in solitude, what awaits her at the break of dawn?

Named one of the honoree of 2025 Influential Leaders by AACSB International, the world’s largest business education alliance earlier this year, Ricky Wong (EMBA 2008) returned to CUHK Business School to share his life philosophy, business insights, and management wisdom. His generous and humorous sharing resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring both laughter and valuable takeaways.

The ” CEO in the House| Dialogue with Ricky Wong Wai-kay – Beyond Limits“, organised by the International Affairs Office and the Alumni Office of CUHK Business School, was held on 29 March and drew over a hundred alumni and business professionals. In his address, Professor Zhou Lin, dean of CUHK Business School, highlighted the School’s long-standing commitment to nurturing outstanding business talents and its ongoing efforts to inspire and foster the growth of distinguished business leaders like Ricky. He also thanked Ricky for taking the time to return to his alma mater and share his insights, encouraging other emerging practitioners to innovate and continue advancing.

Professor Zhou Lin, dean of CUHK Business School (left), presented the award to Ricky Wong (right) on behalf of AACSB.

The event was moderated by Dr Andrew Yuen, principal lecturer in the Department of Decision Sciences, Operations and Technology at CUHK Business School and director of the EMBA programme. “Sentimentality has been my greatest driving force,” Ricky shared, noting that over time, he has become “more sentimental”. This emotional drive has fuelled his persistence, even in the face of operational challenges, ultimately leading to the success of HKTVmall and Hong Kong Broadband Network.

In response to the recent competitive pressures from e-commerce platforms in mainland China, Ricky said that he would face it head-on, viewing it as an opportunity for his team to unite and tackle the challenge directly. As a leader, he emphasised the importance of “trusting that we are unbeatable” and highlighted the key to achieving the “first victory” — selecting manageable battles to win and building the team’s confidence from the outset.

During the Q&A session, participants eagerly seized the opportunity to gain further insights from Ricky, fostering an atmosphere of dynamic engagement. Ricky wrapped up his sharing by encouraging the audience to make the most of every day, discover their true passion, and avoid squandering time.

Following the event, alumni gathered to reflect on Ricky’s inspiring words while savouring refreshments, reconnecting with old friends, and fondly recalling their time during their studies. We look forward to hosting more alumni sharing events in the future and strengthening the bonds within our community.
