On what was a sunny Saturday morning on 17 November, the University Mall was packed with over 1,200 guests and 700 postgraduate students from the Faculty of Business Administration. They had assembled to attend the Master’s Degree (2017-2018) Graduation Ceremony, a significant occasion and one which marks a new milestone in the life of every graduate.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Charles Li, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, gave an inspiring speech to the new graduates about how best to face today’s challenges in the business world. He summarised five important traits that a business person should possess: communications skills, analytical ability, a basic understanding of numerical analysis, knowledge of fundamental economic concepts and, finally, being a good person. He encouraged everyone to prepare for acquiring the knowledge and important skillsets necessary for their own professions, in order to meet the needs of the fast-changing business landscape. In his closing remarks, he said, “Success belongs to those who are well prepared. There are no shortcuts on the path to success.”
Soon, graduates from various master’s programmes lined up to receive their degrees on stage. Presenting them were Prof. Kalok Chan, Dean of CUHK Business School, Ms. Stephanie Villemagne, Associate Dean (Graduate Programmes), and Prof. Vernon Hsu, Chairperson of the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics. Afterwards, Ms. Lilian Lin, a graduating student from the MBA in Finance Programme, gave an encouraging speech to her fellow graduates.
Immediately following the ceremony, the School hosted a Graduates Reception at the Cheng Yu Tung Building. All graduates, parents, faculty members and staff were invited to the celebrations. There were light refreshments, photo booths for graduates and their families, and the chance to take class photos. What’s more, graduates were thrilled with the souvenir counter where they could buy a selection of School souvenirs, ranging from ties, scarves, USB memory sticks and note books, to umbrellas, environmental bags, T-shirts and hoodies.
It was an exciting day filled with fun, laughter and tears, and many cherished memories were created. The Alumni and Corporate Affairs Office would like to congratulate our graduates on embarking on a new chapter in life, and for taking the first step along their career paths.
