Industry Insights: A Look at An Unusual Path to Career Success

Dec 11, 2018

Mr. Edmund Ng, Founder and CIO of Eastfort Asset Management, speaks to an enthusiastic audience of students and alumni

On 28 November, alumni and students gathered in the CUHK Business School Town Centre for the latest “Industry Insights” talk, organised by the Alumni and Corporate Affairs Office. This valuable series is designed to offer ongoing learning opportunities as well as the chance to make connections, and attracts many eminent speakers. This November the spotlight was on Mr. Edmund Ng, Founder and CIO of Eastfort Asset Management Private Limited, who shared how he forged his success through an unusual career path.

Mr. Ng began his career in microbiology before making the unusual switch to finance. After many successful years with JP Morgan Chase and Hong Kong Monetary Authority, he could well have retired. Instead, he broke with convention once again and founded his own asset management business. Mr. Ng explained that the twists and turns in his career had led to many unexpected and rewarding experiences and opportunities. “I firmly believe,” he declared, “that you define your own career success.”

The audience was clearly inspired by Mr. Ng’s experiences as they pondered the possibilities of a non-linear career trajectory. A lively Q&A ensued, artfully facilitated by Mr. Wilson Wan, a BBA alumnus and Chairman of Cleverage Capital Limited.

Mr. Ng was touched by the enthusiastic response of the audience, saying “I am delighted to share my insights and hope that CUHK alumni and students will embark on their own extraordinary career journeys.” Ms. Florence Lai, Alumni and Corporate Affairs Director, thanked Mr. Ng and assured attendees that the “Industry Insights” series would continue to explore interesting and useful topics, allowing alumni and students to keep up with the ever-changing business landscape as they forge their careers.
