These days, there’s a lot of talk about private-public partnerships. But how can social enterprises and businesses work together to create shared value, while having a social impact, too? On 30 July, this hot topic was the subject of an event held by the Social Enterprise Summit @Central and Western District – SE Lab, at Metta, in Lan Kwai Fong, under the theme of “Social Innovation @Lan Kwai Fong”.
Around 100 participants from local businesses, professional organisations, social enterprises, and local and overseas university alumni associations gathered to brainstorm ideas to bring value-added solutions to Lan Kwai Fong. Ideas include recycling wine bottles into handicrafts and selling them in Lan Kwai Fong, transforming unoccupied daytime venues into co-working spaces, kitchen sharing and other creative ideas.
At the event, five speakers from the private and public sectors shared insights from differing perspectives. Mr. Sunny Cheng, Director and Head of Financial Controlling at DHL, and Mr. Johnny Kwok, Founder of Orion Clothing and Production Co., felt honoured to be invited to speak at the event. They are both 2018 EMBA graduates and took the opportunity to brief the audience on the DROP programme run by the EMBA Alumni Association. Established in 2018, the DROP programme aims at inspiring more businesses to “drop” old practices and mindsets to bring about win-win solutions for businesses and the community. Mr. Ivan Pong, President of the EMBA Alumni Association, remarked, “With DROP, we hope to deliver the message of creating shared value to every corner of the community.”
Since its inception in 2008, the Social Enterprise Summit hosts a series of non-profit events every year. It has become a major cross-sector platform among the civic sector, businesses, academia and government to advance social entrepreneurship and social innovation, with the highest hope to build a happy and cohesive society.
