London Calling!

In the first week of July, 14 students from the Global Accounting Stream expanded their horizons on a study trip to London and Lausanne. The trip helped them build cross-cultural connections and included several experiential learning activities, such as company visits and seminars, co-organised by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Alumni Association, United Kingdom, and dedicated alumni collaborating with the School of Accountancy.

Ms. Esther Tsang, Vice President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Alumni Association, United Kingdom, coordinated a visit to HSBC’s headquarters in Canary Wharf where, in a meeting room overlooking the River Thames, the students talked to global leaders about innovations in the financial services sector.

They also visited PricewaterhouseCoopers and met with Ms. Elvera Lo, a manager at Strategy& of PricewaterhouseCoopers London and a 2009 graduate of the BSc in Quantitative Finance Programme.  Ms. Lo explained the work of business consulting and how data analytics is impacting the global financial industry.

Ms. Bonnie Chiu, a 2013 graduate of the Global Business Studies Programme, inspired the group by sharing her journey to establishing Lensational, a social enterprise dedicated to empowering women with photography. She welcomed the students at her company and illustrated, through real examples and case studies, how social impact is measured and delivered.

Last but not least, the students had the exciting opportunity to meet more than 30 CUHK alumni currently working in London at a gathering on 4 July, organised by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Alumni Association, United Kingdom. Prof. Gu Zhaoyang, Director of the School of Accountancy, gave a speech thanking all alumni attending the event and those who helped arrange the corporate visits. It was a splendid evening and a memorable end to their time in London!
