Glocalisation Series:The use of Change – Interpretation on the Hexagrams Xi Kan (習坎) and Li (離) [3]

CUBBAA Hexagrams Yijing Hexagrams workshop 1

For over a century, Hok Hoi Library has been promoting Chinese classical studies in Hong Kong. As early as 1928, it began systematically offering public lectures on the study of the Yijing (Book of Changes). In May and August 2024, Hok Hoi Library collaborated with the BBA Alumni Association of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to organize a lecture series – “The Use of Change”, which explored methods for studying the Yi Jing, with a particular focus on the image-number approach.

The first lecture introduced the Qian and Kun hexagrams, which represent time and space within the framework of the Yijin, as well as their major applications: the Xi Kan and exagrams. The second lecture used the Kan and Li hexagrams to discuss the processes and mindsets one might adopt when facing life’s journeys and challenges, highlighting the wisdom found in the (Traveling) and Qian (Modesty) hexagrams. The third lecture also utilized the Kan and Li hexagrams, explaining how they relate to life’s difficulties and their solutions, as illustrated by the Kun (Adversity) and Jing (Well) hexagrams, which reflect a holistic perspective.

The co-organisers have continued to invite Mr Raymond Lo, a researcher of Yijing, to serve as a speaker to explore the practical applications of this classic Chinese text. Mr Lo has a deep connection with the co-organising institutions, serving as Director of Hok Hoi Library and President of the Alumni Association. A businessman by profession, Mr Lo is also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Master’s Program in Chinese at Hong Kong Hang Seng University and the Advisory Board of the Chinese Department at Lingnan University. He has previously served as a think tank member, business association chairman, and part-time lecturer at a local QS100 university. Mr. Lo graduated from CUHK with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Global Business. Having studied the Yijing for 2 decades, he believes it offers significant insights into politics, economics, management, and public policy, and aims to systematically explain the practical applications of Yi Jing studies.

We are honoured to once again invite Professor Tze-ki Hon to engage in dialogue with Mr Lo. Professor Hon is a renowned sinologist, historian, and scholar of the Yijing. He currently serves as the Dean of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division at the Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College. During the previous lecture, we divined the (Traveling) hexagram transitioning to the Qian (Modesty) hexagram (Fire over Mountain transitioning to Earth over Mountain, with the 4th and top lines changing) to analyse Hong Kong’s economic situation in the latter half of this Dragon Year (2024). This was extensively discussed during the dialogue. In this upcoming lecture, we will continue to elaborate on the applications of Yijing studies and demonstrate its fundamental principle of “continuous growth and transformation,” encapsulated by the essence of Yijing.
