Apr 09, 2019

The FMBA forum drew 200 attendees to an elegant lecture theatre at the Shunde Building of Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management

“New Era, New Retail, New Opportunities” was the theme of the first event of the year by the FMBA Beijing Alumni Association’s Equity Investment Association. The thought-provoking forum was held on 31 March at Tsinghua University.

Speaking at the forum were the founders of three unicorn retail startups. Among the event’s 200 attendees were Ms. Jiao Fangxin, Director of the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management’s Alumni Development Office; Ms. Li Ting, Director of the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management’s Office for Master’s Programs; Ms. Florence Lai, Director of the CUHK Business School’s Alumni and Corporate Affairs Office; FMBA Beijing Alumni Association’s board members; and alumni of the FMBA and other programmes.

Guests were welcomed to the forum by Mr. Bai Songtao (FMBA 2016), Executive Vice President of the FMBA Beijing Alumni Association and Managing Partner of Eagles Fund, who briefly introduced the FMBA Equity Investment Association and its new board members. Next, Mr. Wang Guangyu (FMBA 2004), President of the FMBA Beijing Alumni Association, and founder and Chairman of China Soft Capital Group, shared his vision on “Friendship, Learning and Charity”. Mr. Wang encouraged alumni to capitalise on networking opportunities to advance their knowledge as well as enhance the FMBA programme’s social responsibility component.

Then it was time for the forum’s three distinguished speakers to share insights and industry strategies, in response to the challenges of the new retail era. Mr. Yao Junhong (FMBA 2005), founder and CEO of Souche, spoke on “The New Automotive Retail”. Mr. Zeng Bin (FMBA 2008), co-founder and President of Miss Fresh, introduced “New Retail Thinking and Practice”. And Mr. Ren Zhongwei, partner at DMall, discussed “Digital and Retail Transformation”. Their fascinating presentations showcased the disruptive power of digital technology to unlock innovations in product and service development, driving new customer experiences. There followed an interactive panel discussion with all three speakers, hosted by Mr. Michael Du (FMBA 2004), President of the FMBA Equity Investment Association and partner at Huaxing Growth Capital.

Speaking at the post-forum dinner, Ms. Florence Lai expressed her congratulations at the tremendous success of the FMBA forum, which she described as a well-organised, high-quality event. “I was particularly impressed by the speakers’ insights and their interactive dialogue with the audience,” said Ms. Lai. “Going forward, I hope that our FMBA alumni will make good use of our strong alumni network, while contributing their valuable knowledge and skills to the development of their alma mater and the community.”
