Lunch & Learn Series | Spencer Lam (FMBA 2018) shares CTO insights on opportunities in the IT Industry

The fourth session of the “Lunch & Learn with C-Suite Alumni” series, hosted by the CUHK Business School Alumni Office, welcomed Spencer Lam (FMBA 2018), Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Shangri-La Group. Spencer joined students from the MSc in Information and Technology Management (MScITM) and MSc in Information Science and Technology Management (MScISTM) programmes for a lunch dialogue on emerging industry trends and professional development — an experience students described as highly rewarding.

With extensive experience as CTO across both multinational and well-known Chinese firms spanning pharmaceuticals, investment, technology, and property management, Spencer offered a well-rounded perspective on the evolution of the IT sector in both Hong Kong and mainland China. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, including career prospects for IT professionals in Hong Kong and their role in national development initiatives.

Students actively participated in the discussion, raising thoughtful questions and sharing insights in a lively and intellectually charged atmosphere. In particular, the dialogue explored in depth the impact of artificial intelligence across industries and the positioning of IT functions in various sectors.

To close the session, Spencer offered practical job-hunting advice, emphasising the importance of strengthening soft skills — especially communication — in order to stand out in today’s competitive job market.
