Honorary fellowship conferred on two distinguished Business School alumni

The Chinese University of Hong Kong held its 22nd Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony on 20 May 2024. Seven distinguished people were appointed honorary fellows in recognition of their remarkable accomplishments in their respective fields and their exceptional contributions to the University and the wider community. Two outstanding alumni of CUHK Business School made the list, namely Professor Michael Hui King-man (BBA Marketing 1980) and Mr Roger Luk Koon-hoo (MBA 1981). They have achieved excellence in their fields and society through decades of dedication, and have made substantial contributions to the University’s growth.

Professor Michael Hui King-man (BBA Marketing 1980)

 

CUHK Business School,中大商學院,中大商学院,Honorary Fellows 2024,榮譽院士,荣誉院士,Roger Luk Koon hoo,陸觀豪,陆观豪Professor Michael Hui King-man, who has completed years of study and research in the marketing sector and, even after his retirement from CUHK, still devotes himself regularly to the causes of university education and leadership.

Professor Hui is Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Chair Professor of Marketing at the University of Macau, and Interim Director of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management. Professor Hui earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from CUHK in 1980 and PhD in Marketing from London Business School in 1988. With 23 years of dedicated service at CUHK since 1996, he is the former Head of the Department of Marketing, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Following his retirement from CUHK, he is still serving the University as Emeritus Professor and Honorary Fellow of New Asia College.

Professor Hui focuses on studying services marketing, consumer behaviour and cross-cultural marketing. One of his early papers has been widely recognised as the first services marketing paper published by the Journal of Consumer Research. Professor Hui had taken up various public service appointments including member of the Consumer Council, and was awarded the Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong government for his contributions to consumer education and protection.

Despite his demanding teaching and research responsibilities, Professor Hui has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to serving others and the community. Even after assuming his current position at the University of Macau, he continues to take on new service roles and willingly shares his expertise with the general public.

 

Mr Roger Luk Koon-hoo (MBA 1981)

 

CUHK Business School,中大商學院,中大商学院,Honorary Fellows 2024,榮譽院士,荣誉院士,Roger Luk Koon hoo,陸觀豪,陆观豪Mr Roger Luk Koon-hoo is an alumnus of CUHK who has served as Treasurer of the University’s Council. His experience in the banking sector has complemented his multiple posts on various boards and committees in the University.

Mr Luk is a seasoned banker, graduated from The University of Hong Kong with a degree in Statistics in 1973 and obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from CUHK in 1981. He joined Hang Seng Bank in 1975, where he rose from a trainee officer to Managing Director and Deputy Chief Executive Officer before retirement. Since 1982, Mr Luk has played an integral role in compiling the Hang Seng Index and optimising its constituents selection process. He also introduced four major sector indices for finance, public utilities, properties, and commerce and industry, and involved in the launch of index futures, making exceptional contributions to the long-term development of the Hong Kong stock market.

He is also a distinguished scholar and writer, and currently an honorary research fellow at CUHK’s Hong Kong Institute for Asia-Pacific Studies. His articles offer valuable insights into politics, economics and finance, benefiting both academia and the general public. In 2017, he co-authored the book Alchemy: Milestones of Hong Kong Financial Development with Professor Victor Zheng Wan-tai, providing a comprehensive overview of Hong Kong’s journey to become an international business and financial hub from 1841 to 2015.

Mr Luk has held various public positions and has been bestowed the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong government and the Fellow Certified Banker designation of the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers, as well as being elected as an honorary member of the esteemed international business society Beta Gamma Sigma. He generously contributes his professional knowledge to the development of his alma mater, applying his financial and risk management philosophies to university governance, which was reflected through his former service on the CUHK Council and as the University’s Treasurer, and his current positions as a member of the Committee of Overseers of S.H. Ho College and director of CUHK Medical Centre.
