CEO in the House|Ricky Wong (EMBA 2008): “Sentimentality has been my greatest driving force”

Named one of the honoree of 2025 Influential Leaders by AACSB International, the world’s largest business education alliance earlier this year, Ricky Wong (EMBA 2008) returned to CUHK Business School to share his life philosophy, business insights, and management wisdom. His generous and humorous sharing resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring both laughter and valuable takeaways. The ” CEO in the House| Dialogue with Ricky Wong Wai-kay – Beyond Limits“, organised by the International Affairs Office and the Alumni Office of CUHK Business School, was held on 29 March and drew over a hundred alumni and business professionals. In his address, Professor Zhou Lin, dean of CUHK Business School, highlighted the School’s long-standing commitment to nurturing outstanding business talents and its ongoing efforts to inspire and foster the growth of distinguished business leaders like Ricky. He also thanked Ricky for taking the time to return to his alma mater and share his insights, encouraging other emerging practitioners to innovate and continue advancing. The event was moderated by Dr Andrew Yuen, principal lecturer in the Department of Decision Sciences, Operations and Technology at CUHK Business School and director of the EMBA programme. “Sentimentality has been my greatest driving force,” Ricky shared, noting that over time, he has become “more sentimental”. This emotional drive has fuelled his persistence, even in the face of operational challenges, ultimately leading to the success of HKTVmall and Hong Kong Broadband Network. In response to the recent competitive pressures from e-commerce platforms in mainland China, Ricky said that he would face it head-on, viewing it as an opportunity for his team to unite and tackle the challenge directly. As a leader, he emphasised the importance of “trusting that we are unbeatable” and highlighted the key to achieving the “first victory” — selecting manageable battles to win and building the team’s confidence from the outset. During the Q&A session, participants eagerly seized the opportunity to gain further insights from Ricky, fostering an atmosphere of dynamic engagement. Ricky wrapped up his sharing by encouraging the audience to make the most of every day, discover their true passion, and avoid squandering time. Following the event, alumni gathered to reflect on Ricky’s inspiring words while savouring refreshments, reconnecting with old friends, and fondly recalling their time during their studies. We look forward to hosting more alumni sharing events in the future and strengthening the bonds within our community.
