Alumni Association Series: Shanghai and MSc in ITM

CUHK Business School Shanghai Alumni Association

Founded in 2011, CUHK Business School Shanghai Alumni Association (Shanghai AA) serves as a platform for alumni to gather and network, and provides solid support to them at all ends. President Remy Chan (BBA 1993) is dedicated to unite and assist more young entrepreneurs and future leaders in Shanghai to further develop their career and pass on the legacy.

Dialogue with the President

Q1. What is your current job? Please briefly describe your professional work scope or responsibilities.

Serving in commercial real estate (CRE) industry for more than 24 years, I had worked in global real estate companies including CBRE Group, Inc and Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated (JLL). I started running my own business in 2009, and I am currently providing professional consultancy services on commercial real estate investment and financing, lease sales and operation.

Q2. When did you become the President of the Shanghai Alumni Association and what is your vision for it in the wider alumni community?

Connection and friendship among alumni are not only empowering but also fulfilling. I would spare no efforts to cultivate these valuable connections, and that’s the reason behind my dedication in alumni affairs. I was the founding Vice-President of the Shanghai AA, and succeeded to the Presidency in 2015 when the CUHK Shanghai Alumni Association reorganised and Raymond So (MBA 1981) became its President.

Personally, I think Shanghai AA is not just an alumni platform, but also an organisation offering the needed work and life support to our alumni. Our mission includes:

1. Establishing channels for alumni to connect with our alma mater and each other (CONNECT)

2. Facilitating exchange of experience and other information among alumni (SHARE)

3. Organising entertaining social events for alumni (ENTERTAIN)

Q3. What are the features of the alumni in Shanghai? What are their expectations towards Alumni Association?

Our alumni are from all over China. Besides those born and raised in Shanghai, we also have a large group coming for Shanghai after being professionally educated in Hong Kong. Years after years with more and more graduates returning to Shanghai, our alumni community will not only grow in size but also turn younger. These “new Shanghainese” look forward to quickly becoming part of this global metropolitan, and have a strong desire to meet new friends, seek guidance and expand their social network on a daily basis. Shanghai AA is right in place to assist them.

Q4.What kind of activities/ engagement does Shanghai Alumni Association usually organise, or can you introduce to us some of the highlight activities in the past?

We organise lunch gatherings from time to time for seasoned experts from different industries to share their expertise and broaden the horizon of our alumni. Besides, we also have casual events like hiking, BBQ, war game, happy hour, etc.

With the alumni community getting younger, we will organise more youth-friendly events on top of our regular offers to connect the younger alumni and nurture them to become our future leaders.

Alumni Association Series

CUHK Business School’s alumni have established multiple alumni associations around the world. These associations, classified by programme and region respectively, offer strong support to the Business School. In the coming months, we will introduce individual alumni associations in the Greater China Region via the lens of their Presidents one by one, with a hope to facilitate better understanding and support among the alumni community.

As an alumnus, you are highly encouraged to join an alumni association to keep abreast of the latest updates of your alma mater and the alumni community. Ignite more possibilities by connecting to a larger network and a whole new realm of professional development/ academic opportunities!
